What is Fractional CO2 laser?

Fractional laser carbon dioxide (C02) laser is a non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment. It is a modern innovation with the longest wavelength of all types of lasers which are available in the market and it has been found to work effectively on various skin types including darker skins with appropriate adjustment in the settings.

Fractional CO2 lasers are successful when it is directed towards the treatment of many skin conditions such as deeper wrinkles, more severe textural changes from sun damage, wrinkles, blotchiness, acne scars, and surgical or traumatic scars. Fractional CO2 lasers also work effectively on delicate eyelid skin and around the mouth. It has also been found to be effective in the treatment of sun damage and precancerous growth known as actinic keratosis. It is important to note that this is not covered with insurance.

Who is a suitable candidate for fractional CO2 treatments?

A fractional CO2 laser is effective for treating the following conditions:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Areas of abnormal pigmentation and sun damage
  • Acne scars, facial abrasions and even scars from other causes
  • Patients with large pores

How Does a Fractional CO2 Skin Laser Work?

The cells of the skin are made majorly of water and the principle behind the operation of the fractional CO2 laser is making the water warm. When a fractional Co2 laser is geared towards the affected skin area, the skin cells are gently removed by the laser thereby making new fresh layers of lower skin visible. In addition to this, the heat produced by the laser assist in triggering the development of new collagen, which stimulates the growth of younger and smoother skin. Not minding how aged the outer layers of the skin may look, with fractional C02 laser treatments, there will be an improvement in aging and or sun damaged skin.

When will I see the results?

It is important to note that fractionated CO2 laser can be personalized. Treatments can be deeper, with more time to heal and recover, or shallower, with less healing time. As the treatment is deeper, the results are better. However, some patients prefer to have two less profound treatments to avoid any delays.

Most of the times the results become visible immediately after treatment but you will not see complete results for 3-6 months. After your skin has healed, which may take three to fourteen days; your skin will be a little pink after 4 to 6 weeks. During this time the skin will look smooth and look less shabby. When the color returns to normal, you will see less line, less blotchiness, and more glow.

How are fractionated CO2 laser treatments performed?

Prior to the treatment, it is important that you arrive early. The area to be treated will be cleaned by your technician after this; a numbing cream will be applied to the area. Patients are also giving anti-inflammatory Toradal, which will help to alleviate any form of discomfort. When all these are done, you can then sit back and relax while the numbing cream takes effect.

After about an hour of numbness, the numbing gel will be removed. The treatment lasts about an hour for full faces and gives a little feeling of “pins and needles”. For comfortable treatment process, a strong stream of cold air (a Zimmer cooler) is blown over the area. The discomfort differs as it ranges from mild to moderate (2-4 / 10).
