Botulinum toxin (BTX) is produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. This toxin is able to temporarily block nerve activity in the muscles and sweat glands leading to a temporary reduction in muscle activity and / or sweating.

There are 7 varieties of this toxin which have been classified and named from “A” to “G”. The different varieties of botulinum toxin are similar from the structural point of view but differ with respect to the potency and duration of their effect.

Botulinum toxin type A is the most potent, and its effects are the longest lasting. Type A toxin is conventionally used for therapeutic purposes, although types B, C and F have also been used clinically and / or experimentally.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approves the use of Botulinum Toxin A for the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), blepharospasms, hemifacial spasms, and spasmodic torticollis. In addition, it has a very extensive use in aesthetic medicine since it allows the elimination of expression lines thus providing a smooth and rejuvenated face.

Currently, Botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) is the most important commercially available serotype. The most popular commercial preparations are Dysport® (Ipsen) and Botox® (Allergan).

In the case of Dyspot, the botulinum toxin is more diluted which allows it to expand better in the tissue and be absorbed more quickly. Therefore, the final results can be seen after 24 or 48 hours of application. Unlike Botox injections, the results of which can take up to 7 days to become visible. In addition, the results of Botox injections last approximately 4 months, while those of Dysport can last 4 to 6 months.

Botulinum toxin is applied through small injection in facial expression lines. After application, patients can continue with their daily routine. However, there may be mild pain and local inflammation that usually persists for a few hours.

It is important to keep in mind that both Dysport and Botox are two treatments that must be administered by doctors specializing in aesthetic medicine and with experience in the use of these products.
